You need to stop martyring yourself. Too often we get sucked into the tsunamis of life and we don’t realize we’re drowning until it’s too late. We often spend days filled with never ending work, breaks are rare, short and hurried. Sometimes you feel so guilty resting you try to find something to do just so you feel productive. Fuelled by a need to be constantly busy, we love exchanging burn out stories. Trying to one-up each other you tell tales of how you’ve survived entire weekends on just two hours of sleep or how by denying yourself food you were able to complete a project just before the deadline. You feel accomplished when they praise how hard you work, you wear your exhaustion proudly like a badge of honour.
That’s no way to live. The trap of toxic productivity steals your identity and makes you believe that your value lies in what you can do. You are worth much more than that. You don’t always have to be doing, get away from the noise sometimes to recharge and rest. However, creating time for self-care can seem like an impossible goal. But, the number one rule of self-care is “Do what works for you”. So you don’t have feel overwhelmed, your version of self-care is unique. Don’t worry about getting it right as long as you are comfortable and relaxed. Still here’s some simple self-care tips for you.
ORGANIZE YOUR SPACE
It’s hard to relax in a messy place. Decluttering and organizing your space creates a soothing environment. Organizing may not be a fun process, but the refreshing feeling you get from a clean space is definitely worth it. You’ll feel your stress melt away as everything starts to come together. Because your environment makes it easier for you to unwind, you should make organizing first on your list.
SAVE THE DATE
To avoid any unwanted interruptions make sure you add it to your schedule just like you would do for any other event. Inform your family and friends that you’ll be unavailable for a period of time. You don’t have to tell them what it’s for, just let them know so you won’t be distracted. Be sure to set it on a day when you are usually less busy.
Take a long refreshing bath, afterwards catch up on sleep by taking a well-deserved nap. Once you are rested take your time doing the things you enjoy. This is where your creativity really comes into play. Catch up on TV, read a book, pamper your body or create art. It’s up to you. This is your time, enjoy every second of it by spending it on things you love.
Don’t rush through self-care. Take your time. Try not to think of work. Focus on yourself; on how you feel and how you are doing. Try to relax without the pressures and responsibilities of life weighing on you. The activities you could do are endless, but take it one step at a time. Don’t attempt to do everything you’ve been missing out on in a single day.
So, don’t wait until you are at your wits end, bone tired and mentally drained before you create time for self-care. Self-care is vital, you can’t do without it. You might not always have time to dedicate an entire day to self-care, but even on days like that you have to find little moments to recharge. A ten minute nap can go a long way, you can even take short breaks to refuel. Self-care is achievable and it should never be neglected.
